Epoetin may also be used to prevent or treat anemia caused by other conditions, such as AIDS, cancer, or surgery

Side Effects of This Medicine


More common-in any treatment group

Chest pain; shortness of breath

Less common-in any treatment group

Anxiety ; blurred vision ; convulsions (seizures); cough ; dizziness or lightheadedness; fainting ; fast heartbeat ; nausea ; pain or discomfort in arms, jaw, back or neck; pains in chest, groin, or legs, especially calves of legs ; severe headaches of sudden onset; sudden loss of coordination ; sudden and severe inability to speak ; slurred speech ; sudden vision changes; sweating ; temporary blindness; vomiting; weakness in arm and/or leg on one side of the body, sudden and severe


More common—for patients being treated for anemia due to chronic kidney failure

Fever; headache; increased blood pressure; swelling of face, fingers, ankles, feet, or lower legs; vision problems; weight gain

Rare—for patients being treated for anemia due to chronic kidney failure
Changes in skin color; changes in vision; double vision; migraine headache; pain, tenderness, swelling of foot or leg; pale skin; partial or complete loss of vision in eye; skin rash or hives; sore throat; tenderness, pain, swelling, warmth, skin discoloration, and prominent superficial veins over affected area; unusual bleeding or bruising; unusual tiredness or weakness

More common—for patients being treated for anemia due to chronic kidney failure who require dialysis (in addition to those listed above)

Cough; fast heartbeat; fever; redness or pain at the dialysis access site; sneezing; sore throat

More common treated HIV-infected patients
Fever; headache; skin rash or hives

More common—for cancer patients on chemotherapy

Cough, sneezing or sore throat; fever; swelling of face, fingers, ankles, feet or lower legs; weight gain

More common—for surgical patients

Blood in urine, lower back pain, or pain or burning while urinating; fever; headache; increased blood pressure; skin rash or hives; swelling of face, fingers, ankles, feet or lower legs; swelling or pain in legs; weight gain
Other side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Epoetin sometimes causes an influenza-like reaction, with symptoms such as muscle aches, bone pain, chills, shivering, and sweating, occurring about 1 or 2 hours after an injection. These symptoms usually go away within 12 hours. However, check with your doctor if this influenza-like reaction or any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome:

Heparin

Heparin is used for:
Preventing harmful blood clots.

Heparin is an anticoagulant. It works by blocking reactions in the body that lead to blood clots.


How to use Heparin :
Use Heparin as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

If Heparin contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and away from pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain local regulations for proper disposal.
If you miss a dose of Heparin , contact your doctor.
Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Heparin



Possible side effects of Heparin :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Irritation or mild pain at the injection site.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); black, tarry stools; bleeding from gums when brushing or flossing teeth; chills; continued redness or pain after an injection; coughing up blood; fever; excessive bleeding from cuts; increased menstrual bleeding; nosebleeds; red urine; severe headache; stomach pain or swelling; unexplained vaginal bleeding; unusual bruising; vomit that looks like coffee grounds.

Iron

Iron is used for:
Supplementing iron in the diet and treating or preventing anemia (low red blood cell levels) due to low iron levels. It may also be used for other conditions .

Iron is a mineral. It works by helping the body to make hemoglobin, which is found in red blood cells. Hemoglobin allows red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body, which helps to reduce the effects of anemia.

Before using Iron :
Some medical conditions may interact with this medicine. :

* pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
*taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
*allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
* colon problems, Crohn disease, or a peptic ulcer
* have anemia not caused by iron deficiency, porphyria cutanea tarda, liver or kidney problems, thalassemia, or a history of alcohol abuse, or have had multiple blood transfusions


How to use Iron :

Iron is absorbed better on an empty stomach, but may be taken with food if it upsets stomach.
Do not take antacids within 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking Iron .
Take Iron with a full glass (8 oz/240 mL) of water.
Do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking Iron .
If you miss a dose of Iron , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Possible side effects of Iron :

Constipation; diarrhea; nausea; stomach discomfort.

SEVERE side effects occur:

Precautions While Using This Dietary SupplementFor individuals taking vitamin D without a prescription :

Vitamin D is stored in the body; therefore, when you take more than the body needs, it will build up in the body. This may lead to poisoning. Problems are more likely to occur in:
Adults taking 20,000 to 80,000 Units a day and more for several weeks or months.
Children taking 2,000 to 4,000 Units a day for several months.
Remember that the total amount of vitamin D you get every day includes what you get from foods that you eat and what you take as a supplement.
If you are taking this medicine for a reason other than as a dietary supplement, your doctor should check your progress at regular visits to make sure that it does not cause unwanted effects.

Do not take any nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicine or dietary supplement that contains calcium, phosphorus, or vitamin D while you are taking any of these dietary supplements unless you have been told to do so by your health care professional. The extra calcium, phosphorus, or vitamin D may increase the chance of side effects.

Do not take antacids or other medicines containing magnesium while you are taking any of these medicines. Taking these medicines together may cause unwanted effects .


Side Effects of This Dietary Supplement
Along with its needed effects, a dietary supplement may cause some unwanted effects. Alfacalcidol, calcifediol, calcitriol, dihydrotachysterol, and ergocalciferol do not usually cause any side effects when taken as directed. However, taking large amounts over a period of time may cause some unwanted effects that can be serious .


Late symptoms of severe overdose

High blood pressure; high fever; irregular heartbeat; stomach pain (severe)


Early symptoms of overdose

Bone pain; constipation (especially in children or adolescents); diarrhea; drowsiness; dryness of mouth; headache (continuing); increased thirst; increase in frequency of urination, especially at night, or in amount of urine; irregular heartbeat; itching skin; loss of appetite; metallic taste; muscle pain; nausea or vomiting (especially in children or adolescents); unusual tiredness or weakness

Late symptoms of overdose

Bone pain; calcium deposits (hard lumps) in tissues outside of the bone; cloudy urine; drowsiness; increased sensitivity of eyes to light or irritation of eyes; itching of skin; loss of appetite; loss of sex drive; mood or mental changes; muscle pain; nausea or vomiting; protein in the urine; redness or discharge of the eye, eyelid, or lining of the eyelid; runny nose; weight loss
