Women who get migraines with a characteristic "aura" have a higher stroke risk than women who don't get migraines or women who get them without an aura — a glowing effect around objects as the headache develops.
Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School say women with aura migraines have a 50 percent increased risk of total stroke and 70 percent higher risk of ischemic stroke, the kind caused by a blockage. The teams analyzed records of 40,000 women in the Women's Health Study, an ongoing trial examining effects of aspirin and vitamin E on heart disease and cancer.

A diet rich in calcium can help women avoid developing kidney stones. The stones, made up of calcium and salty crystals that come from oxalic acid, are very painful and can block the urinary tract or enter the bladder. They are usually treated with ultrasound or, sometimes, surgery.

Some doctors suggest kidney-stone patients cut calcium intake, but an analysis of the dietary habits and health of nearly 100,000 female nurses found those who consumed more calcium reduced their risk of kidney stones. The study also confirmed higher sugar intake increases the risk. Eating meat was not found to be a risk factor, contrary to previous research.

Researchers also found a dietary ingredient called phytate, which is found in cold cereal, dark bread and beans, helped prevent kidney stones. The study ran in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
