Part 1
Primary care physicians are being encouraged to open their offices to people addicted to heroin, an effort supporters say will greatly expand the treatment possibilities for people who aren't able to get care now. Methadone maintenance programs, which are the primary type of treatment for heroin addiction, today enroll only an estimated 14% of addicts.

"Many people want to quit, but lack of access to treatment is a tremendous problem," Mary Stuart, ScD, tells WebMD. Stuart is the co-author of a study in the March 8 Journal of the American Medical Association, which reviewed the care of heroin addicts in Glasgow and Edinburgh, Scotland, to see what could be learned that might help improve the lot of heroin users in the U.S.

Lonnie Bristow, MD, a former American Medical Association president, strongly supports the JAMA studies on the value of methadone treatment. "The core of the [access] problem is that what is really an illness is viewed by most of society as being a criminal activity," he says. "[But] we don't say to people who have diabetes, 'Well, fine, we'll treat you, but just as soon as we can, we're going to get you off of the insulin.' We recognize it's a chronic illness, and if we can get people to a level of optimal functioning while using a medicinal aid, fine. It's difficult to get society to look at heroin addiction from the same perspective."
